#106. Floetry by JulietKego: Burial ( A Dirge for my Homeland)

Floetry by JulietKego: BURIAL (A Dirge for Naija)

She, who wears her heart
on your flowing dashiki sleeves
must learn to take it back and tuck it in,
into the zipless tight bands
of her ill-fitting, adire maxi skirts.
She, who dances egedege in innocence
under Delta rains,
her teardrops mired in mascara,
the mud rippling into rivers of truth
must learn to climb Udi hills;
mountains of amorphous Olumo rocks
steeped in sin in amorous layered Lokoja
And then cleanse her skin and soul
In Niger-Benue sister-rivers and Nike lakes.
Let the Jos plateaus set a table
filled with a sumptuous, bitter buffet,
call the rejects, the heartbroken
lost in the vineless, silent Idanre valleys
let us celebrate a love that breathes not
and as she sleeps on in coma;
prepare to pull the plug.
Give a befitting burial to Africa’s heart
and when robin birds sing a dirge
we will lower her non too gently
to the weighted arms of Nne,
the Mother Earth.

#113. Floetry by Julietkego: Seasons

Floetry by JulietKego: Seasons

It’s falling,
with autumn’s leaves and rains
free me from his fierce reigns
lock me in your welcoming fold…

It’s scorching,
with summer’s sun-kiss of death
shield me from his heated stares
soothe me with your cool breath…

It’s blooming,
with the crispy, wisp of spring
I’m overwhelmed with his colours
diffuse my senses with your kisses…

Its freezing,
with winter’s heart of cold
free me from his icy hold
tickle me with your teasing
touches and I’ll sheath you
with my stirring heath…

#112. Floetry by JulietKego: I Miss You…

Missing You

Floetry by JulietKego: I miss you

I miss you
Like a litany of prayers
And a string of curses
I miss you
Like a harsh plea of mercy
and a gentle provocation
I miss you
Like the heavy monsoon rains
And crackling harmattan winds
I miss you
Like Via Dolorosa;
the path of pain and passion,
‘Tis truly our way of the cross

I miss you
Like a tourist lost in Jerusalem
Re-tracing paths once walked
I miss you
While meeting the people you touched.
Stirred by the imprints of your essence….
You who linger on wherever you go,
Long, long after you’re risen and gone.
I miss you
Finding you on the sidewalks,
Deep in David’s mountains,
in vine-less valleys and open fields.

And I miss you,
Like a perfect nail to a cross
I miss you
Like John misses the Jordan
I miss you
and that child-like joyful laugh
How it tingles all over my form.
I suffer, beloved, you suffer.
I rejoice, you beam with joy
I miss you
Like Fatima misses her chaplet
I miss you
Like the nuns miss their habit
I miss you
Like a new bride misses her bindi
And I dance that I found you
still here, nestled within my heart
Oh how I missed you, Dear Isa
My crazy, pagan, child of God et al…

#98. Floetry by JulietKego: Heartbreak (In slow motion)…

Heart break

#98. Heatbreak, in slow motion.

And in my left hand
an intricately patterned
Russian crystal wine-glass
half-filled, half-empty
with fine, tangy red wine
I am floating away
from myself

#97. Floetry by JulietKego: Hug me

Juliet Kego Ume-Onyido Poet. Dreamer of dreams

Listen to the audio version of the poem: “Hug Me”

Give me
a hug
I need more…
Hmmmnnn Tighter, still…
Until I disappear
Into the folds of your warmth
Release me
Only when
All pieces of you
Flow into me
Till all I am is imprinted
On the opening
Of your heart.
