Online writing, blogging, citizen journalism has become global game changer in the way we communicate today. The advent of digital tools brought a lot of disruptions to the way organizations and individuals communicate.
No serious brand can neglect or refuse to pay attention to what is going on online. Those who do that in the past have had to bite their fingers. The impact can be far-reaching.
The social tools offer a lot of opportunities as well as give voice to everyone who has something to say. Long gone were the days when only traditional media actors were the sole gate keepers. The environment has changed for good and we may never go back to that dark days. The online world has world famous influencers who through hard work have become what they become by tapping into opportunities provided. For many bloggers and online writers, they started out as fun-loving, wannabees. Along the line, they fine tune their trades and moved on in life to become online media guru with lots of Million Dollar advertising revenue.
For many start-up entrepreneurs, online writing and thought leadership building has helped them to become go-to experts, sought out speakers and consultants just because they know how to tap into this gold field.
Why the opportunity remains, many are still in the stage of dilly dallying as to whether to embrace the tool or are still arguing silently if these tools can deliver for them as it has for some who were seen as common men and women yesterday but who today can afford to live the kind of life they had always longed for without involving themselves in illegal or shady deals.
In Nigeria of today, there are many great examples of individuals who had tapped into online tools and with some trainings, either on the job or through basic training in journalism have become great examples of what digital tools can offer. We have likes of Linda Ikeji, Olorisupergirl, Niyitabiti, Seun Osewa of Nairaland, Japheth Omojuwa, Tolu Ogunlesi, Blossom Nnodim and the likes of Alibaba GCFR, Steve Onu(Yaw wazobia), Matse among many others celebrities who had and are still using digital tools to enhance their profiles.
We also have strong online media houses who are making wave just by tapping into digital tools. We have such media houses like Premium News, The Cable, Osundefenders and out of Nigeria based SaharaReporters by Omoyele etc. These ideas were not possible twenty years ago but have become possible through digital tools.
But with these opportunities also come with issue of phishing, plagiarism fake online whistle blowers and lots of wannabees who have no regards for ethics or truth. Some are just being deliberately mischievous while many do not know the right thing to do.
To put things in order, some of us who had been involved in this trade for about a decade and above feel it is high time we established a forum where Nigeria Bloggers, citizen journalists, online writers or aspiring individuals can learn, share experience, network as well as collaborate. Hence the establishment of this initiative called Nigeria Bloggers and Online Writers’ Forum.
For those who are still thinking is online writing good for me or my business, this is platform where you can make informed decision and set the ball rolling. For many who just joined or have been here for a long time, it is an opportunity to network, share experience with regards to international best practises. We see a lot of bad stuff going on out there. That our environment has no strict laws with regards to online writing now is not an excuse to do lots of things some are doing today.
While the forum website construction is still ongoing, we will like to invite like minds who feel this can be a good forum for them to fill this free membership form. You will be done in two minutes. We hope to start a monthly learning and experience sharing as well as networking opportunities soon.
To get update, it will be good to sign in as fast as possible. Even if you are still aspiring to be one. Take this advantage now. It has been proven ‘if you want to go ahead, go alone but if you must move farther, collaborate with great minds’.
