#79. A Grandmother’s Whispers
‘Child, face your fears and embrace your power,
pursue your passions and follow your purpose
have a date with destiny, dare to grab your dreams
Even when you derail, rise and get back on your path
Revel in only whom and what make your soul sing
and beam with joy, with light and with love’s delight…’
My grandmother whispered these words of wisdom
but I never did care to listen or even understand.
And so, carelessly, I threw them away to the wind
Like meaningless, worthless grains of sand.
And in her sing-song voice she’d call to me:
Akweke! Akweke! Akweke!
I’d hear her only in my dreams, I was hardly awake.
And then I grew up and life, all my dreams did take
Last night my grandmother came to me in my dreams,
in the dreams that I dream of the dreams that I dream
as I laid curled up in defeat, mourning the death of me
And in her sing-song voice she whispered gently to me:
‘Child, face your fears and embrace your power,
pursue your passions and follow your purpose
have a date with destiny, dare to grab your dreams
Even when you derail, rise and get back on your path
Revel in only whom and what make your soul sing
And beam with joy, with light and with love’s delight…’
And now I hear her well for I am finally alive and awake
I listen to her sing-song voice as she called out to me:
Akweke! Akweke! Akweke! http://wp.me/s2pO05-akweke

This is a very inspiring post. I’ve been listening to this song by Mali its called “Walking Shoes” and basically it talks about taking that walk better yet to keep walking. I fell in love with his chorus which states ” I believe, I believe, but its a dream that I aint seen yet, chasing a dream that I aint dream yet, but Im going to meet it half way if I keep walking…” That inspiration and beautiful way that its sung connects me to your words hear and your grandmothers whisper. Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed your line
“Last night my grandmother came to me in my dreams,
in the dreams that I dream of the dreams that I dream
as I laid curled up in defeat, mourning the death of me”
that just seems powerful, beautiful and sweet to me. I really connected.

JMD, thanks for sharing, hmmmnnn this one is such a special piece for me as well. It’s a follow up (or intro if you will) of my other poem Akweke! I’d had an opportunity to do a live performance of Akweke sometime last year and the night before the event, during rehearsals, these words came and I had to honour them by making it a separate poem. Thankful that you shared how it connected and resonated with you. Keep writing and creating, it is the most freeing thing ever!! -Juliet Kego
